The Kwara State Government has ordered the immediate temporary closure of all schools in five local government areas (LGAs) due to rising insecurity, effective November 20, 2025. The measure is a precautionary step to safeguard pupils from security threats amid ongoing operations against armed groups in the region.
Affected Areas
The directive from the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development applies to schools in the following five LGAs in the southern part of the state:
Ifelodun
Ekiti
Irepodun
Isin
Oke Ero
All boarding schools in Irepodun are also covered by this order, as they were identified as potential targets.
Rationale and Status
The school closures follow a series of violent incidents in the area, including an attack on a church in Eruku, Ekiti LGA, where two worshippers were killed and 30 kidnapped. The government hopes to prevent criminals from using schoolchildren as human shields while security forces intensify their crackdowns on hideouts in border towns with Kogi state.
The schools will remain closed until further notice, pending security clearance that the areas are safe for normal academic activities to resume. The government has urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies during this period.
