A 100-level student of Yobe State University, Damaturu, Amina Yakubu, was killed in a road accident on Saturday, near the institution’s gate, PUNCH Metro gathered on Sunday.
The spokesperson of the Yobe State Police Command, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, who spoke with our correspondent via a telephone conversation, explained that the crash was linked to diversions on Gujba Road caused by military operations in the area, noting that motorists are often forced into a single lane. He added that due to impatience and other factors, accidents had been occurring from time to time along that stretch.
According to him, the diversion often forces motorists into a single lane, and impatience by road users sometimes leads to accidents.
He said, “So, yesterday, (Saturday), there was an incident like that. Amina and a few other students got injured. Eventually, Amina lost her life. She was one of the passengers. They were all on board the tricycle.”
Abdulkarim added that while Amina died, four others sustained slight injuries but had since received treatment at a hospital.
In his condolence message to Amina’s family, Abdulkarim said, “The only message is that I condole with the family in the first instance.”
He, however, used the opportunity to call for safer road practices in the state.
“This should be a wake-up call for the entire community that reckless and dangerous driving is claiming more lives every day. My advice is that we need government presence to check the causes of these incidents. Commercial riders should also consider the lives of others and their own first, before anything else. I will also suggest training for most Keke NAPEP riders on how to use their tricycles and other means of transport for commercial purposes.
Amina has since been laid to rest according to Islamic rites.
