Northern Region Directorate of Road Traffic and Road Safety Service says they are facing challenges in promoting road safety due to human resource constraints, resistance from kabaza operators, and failure by taxi drivers to take safety measures seriously.
The region's Principal Road Transport Officer, Grayson Msuku, says that illegal practices such as speeding, overloading, and refusal to use helmets by some drivers and motorcycle riders are affecting their efforts.
He has since urged the government to recruit more staff to strengthen road safety initiatives, saying the current workforce is too small.
Meanwhile, Mzuzu Kabaza President Moses Mwalabu says they are conducting more awareness campaigns to promote road safety.
He added that kabaza operators are being trained in highway codes and grouped to help teach each other.
